The Psychology of Elvis Tributes

As music fills the room of theatres and pubs across the globe, many take their seats seeking to watch someone perform and appear in the likeness of Elvis Presley. Whilst tribute acts of other cultural icons such as David Bowie and Johnny Cash exist, there is an excess of Elvis Tributes that no other can rival. These people create divided opinions, Elvis fans love them or hate them, finding them a mockery or a beautiful tribute. With the very early passing of Elvis, it is understandable why some want to experience his shows. However, what attracts someone to take on the task of performing as the King himself has a far less clear answer. This article considers 3 possible  reasons, objectively analysing the pros and cons of Elvis tribute artistry.

Reason One - Fame/Money

The most shallow of all the reasons on this list, the object of fame and money is undoubtedly fueling some performers. Becoming well-known and well-respected is the natural way for many men, admiring those in higher status places. While some men achieve this through working in finance, others opt for cuban heels. Attention is undoubtedly an addictive disease, to emulate someone like Elvis who had immense popularity reveals a certain desire for fame. Some may argue that gaining money and fame from his legacy, is exploitative and isn't as valuable as original talent. That considered, many Elvis Tributes perform out of love for their idol and do not make a liveable wage, typically having a job alongside of their performing.

Reason Two - Love for Elvis

Elvis Presley’s vocals, performance, stamina and stage presence are aspirational to anyone, especially those who are performers. The phenomenon of Elvis Presley has trickled down each generation, creating a large fanbase. The opportunity to add and continue this legacy is appealing to many, particularly when performing as Elvis can create more joy for existing Elvis fans. As Elvis famously said, “ Living up to an image is very hard “, with the King struggling to live up to his own image, anyone attempting to do the same undoubtedly has courage. Continuing to bring to life his performances and charisma is not an easy task, however the continued drive and passion a lot of Elvis Tributes show indicates a true love for the man they emulate.

Reason Three - Connecting to something bigger

Becoming an Elvis Tribute can feel like joining a lineage, offering a brotherhood to those with atypical interests. While Elvis Presley has fans of all ages, he is not a popular figure for most modern young people. Those with an interest in Elvis/Older music generally may feel isolated from their peers. This is particularly intense if the person has a hyperfixation on the singer, common amongst autistic people. Being an Elvis Tribute allows young men to unite with fans of their favourite singers, connecting them to a community of potential friends. The Elvis community is large, when you become a tribute artist you connect to decades of music, fans and shared cultural memories. This offers a unique sense of belonging.
